Stardock does have a rep for creating good RTS titles (it has two whole SERIES of them in the arsenal - the GalCiv series, and the Sins of a Solar Empire series). Instead, I played it using DX11, and on the desktop in my sig (the absolute minimum for Ashes, according to Stardock). Unlike most of the reviewers so far, I didn't play using DX12 - I don't have a DX12-capable GPU. However, it will punish you for neglecting your defense - however, that is true of a good human opponent. And the normal AI is quite competent - and no, it doesn't cheat. And it's getting better and better.Īshes will stretch you - make no mistake. Most importantly, the AI in Ashes at normal can beat over 90% of players (it was something like 93% as of 0.92). What someone might call cheating in Ashes is akin to calling a bowling or golf handicap as cheating. Most people don't realize just how brazenly most AIs cheat. You can build a counter force knowing the AI won't just build defenses for it. In Ashes, the AI doesn't know your units until it has seen them. It knows your unit composition the moment it is constructed.

In most RTS games, what people don't usually realize is that the AI in those games knows all, sees all. They don't just spawn units in FOW (a common AI trick in games) to even the odds. Their weapons do the same damage as yours do. In all cases, they are playing by the same rules you are. Tough and Painful give them more along with slightly faster build times. Challenging gives the AI a slight resource boost.
